Material & Composition
What is diatomaceous earth?
Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring mineral formed from the fossilized remains of microscopic algae called diatoms. Its microscopic porous structure gives it exceptional absorption and evaporation properties, which is why it outperforms fabric and memory foam in humid environments. The material has been used safely for centuries in food processing, water filtration, and skincare.
What is a MEGEM bath mat made from?
MEGEM is composed of diatomaceous earth (~47%), quartz sand (~25%), and natural cellulose pulp (~22%), with trace minerals (~6%). Pure diatomaceous earth is a powder. To produce a surface you can stand on, it must be reinforced. The quartz adds compressive strength and hardness. The cellulose pulp creates a tensile network that holds the mineral matrix together under repeated load. No synthetic coatings, no chemical additives. Most brands don't tell you what's inside. We do, because we believe you should know exactly what you are standing on.
Is a diatomaceous earth bath mat non-toxic and safe for families?
Yes. MEGEM uses food-grade diatomaceous earth, the same grade used in water filtration and food processing. The FDA classifies food-grade diatomaceous earth as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS). Our composition has been independently tested and verified. No synthetic coatings, no chemical treatments, no PVC, no phthalates. It is safe for bare skin contact, including children and pets.
Do stone bath mats contain asbestos? Is MEGEM safe?
This is a legitimate question and we take it seriously. The asbestos concerns reported online relate specifically to low-cost unverified imports with no third-party testing. MEGEM's composition is independently laboratory tested and verified — report reference ULSTEST2510090003E. Food-grade diatomaceous earth by definition does not contain asbestos. When sanding, wet the surface first and work in a well-ventilated area. Normal daily use produces no dust whatsoever.
Why does my Summit mat have small white spots?
This is completely normal. Diatomaceous earth is naturally light in color. When compressed into a dark surface like Summit Basalt, small pale fragments of the mineral remain visible. This is not a defect. It is the nature of the material. Every Summit mat has this characteristic. We consider it part of the material's honest character.
Performance & How It Works
How does a diatomaceous earth bath mat absorb water so quickly?
The diatomaceous earth in MEGEM contains millions of microscopic pores, each one acting as a capillary channel that draws water in on contact. When you step onto the mat, water is pulled into these pores in seconds, leaving the surface dry immediately. The same porous structure then allows the water to evaporate rapidly back into the air, resetting the mat's capacity after each use.
Are stone bath mats better than fabric bath mats?
A fabric mat absorbs water and holds it, often staying damp for 60 minutes or longer, which creates an environment where bacteria and mold thrive. You have to wash it weekly just to keep it hygienic. MEGEM absorbs water in seconds and evaporates it completely. It never needs washing. It does not degrade with washing cycles. It does not grow mold. Over its lifespan it is both cleaner and more economical than fabric.
What if a stone bath mat stops absorbing water over time?
This happens when the surface pores become blocked with skin oils, soap residue, or mineral deposits. It is normal and easily fixed. Use the included sandpaper to lightly abrade the surface. This opens the pores again and fully restores absorption. Most people do this every few months depending on use. Wet the surface first before sanding and work in a ventilated space.
Can you use a stone bath mat inside the shower?
No. MEGEM is designed for use outside the shower or bath, not inside it. Continuous water flow directly onto the mat will saturate the pores and exceed the mat's evaporation capacity. It is designed for step-out use: you step onto it once, it absorbs the water from your feet, and it resets. Used this way it performs exactly as intended.
My mat appears slightly curved or warped. Is this normal?
Yes. Diatomaceous earth is highly porous and absorbs moisture unevenly depending on which face is exposed to humidity. After a hot shower, one side may take in more moisture than the other, causing a temporary curve. Place the mat face-down on a flat surface and allow it to dry completely. It will return to flat as the moisture evaporates. If the curve persists once fully dry, contact us at hello@megemhome.com.
Care & Maintenance
How do you clean a diatomaceous earth stone bath mat?
Wipe with a damp cloth for everyday cleaning. If the surface becomes less absorbent over time, lightly sand with the included sandpaper to restore the pores. Always wet the surface before sanding and do so in a well-ventilated area. Do not submerge in water or place in a washing machine. For deeper stains, a small amount of diluted hydrogen peroxide applied with a cloth will lift most marks.
Do stone bath mats stain easily?
The Alpine Chalk variant can show marks from dirt, hair, and darker liquids more readily than Summit Basalt due to its light color. Most surface marks can be removed with a damp cloth. For stubborn stains, light sanding with the included sandpaper removes the top layer and restores the original appearance. We recommend stepping onto Alpine only with clean feet.
Do diatomaceous earth bath mats crack or break easily?
MEGEM is durable under normal standing use. However, like any stone or ceramic object, it can crack if dropped onto a hard surface from height or subjected to a sharp impact. Always keep the anti-slip rubber pad underneath, which distributes your weight evenly and significantly reduces the risk of cracking. Handle with the same care you would give a ceramic tile.
How long does a stone bath mat last?
With normal use and occasional sanding, a MEGEM mat will last several years. Unlike fabric mats that degrade with washing cycles, the mineral composite does not fray, thin, or lose structure. It is a permanent object, not a consumable. The limiting factor is physical damage from impact, not material degradation.
Can a stone bath mat grow mold?
Diatomaceous earth is naturally antimicrobial — its dry, porous structure is inhospitable to mold under normal use. Mold can form if surface pores become blocked by accumulated skin oils, soap residue, or hair, which traps moisture at the surface rather than drawing it through. The fix is the same as for reduced absorption: lightly sand with the included sandpaper, rinse, and allow to dry fully. Keep your bathroom ventilated between uses. With normal care, mold is not a realistic concern.
Placement & Safety
Are stone bath mats safe on wet bathroom floors?
Yes. The mat absorbs water on contact, keeping the surface dry underfoot rather than becoming slippery. Combined with the included anti-slip rubber pad, the mat stays firmly in place on wet bathroom floors.
Will a stone bath mat scratch tile, wood, or marble floors?
The mat ships with an anti-slip rubber pad that sits between the mat and your floor. This protects both the mat and your surface. Always use the pad on tile, stone, hardwood, and especially marble floors. Do not use the mat directly on an unsealed or polished floor without the pad.
Does the MEGEM stone bath mat come with a non-slip base?
Yes. Every MEGEM mat ships with an anti-slip rubber pad, sandpaper for surface restoration, and a care guide. Everything you need is in the box from day one.
Are diatomaceous earth bath mats safe for children and pets?
Yes. The material is non-toxic and contains no chemical treatments, synthetic coatings, or harmful substances. Children and pets can use the mat safely. The only precaution is physical: the mat is a solid mineral object and should not be accessible to pets or children who might knock it over, as it can crack on hard impact.
Variants — Alpine & Summit
What is the difference between Alpine and Summit?
Alpine Chalk is a natural chalk white, suited to bright bathrooms with pale tile, white marble, and natural stone. Summit Basalt is a deep charcoal, designed for dark interiors with matte black fixtures, walnut, and smoked oak. Both are the same material, same dimensions, same performance. The difference is purely visual. Each is made for a specific environment.
Which stone bath mat is right for my bathroom?
If your bathroom is light (white tile, pale grout, bright fixtures) choose Alpine. If your bathroom leans dark (charcoal stone, matte black, dark wood) choose Summit. If you are unsure, Alpine is the more versatile of the two and works across a wider range of bathroom tones.
