Diatomaceous earth.
A mineral built
for water.
MEGEM is a mineral composite surface: diatomaceous earth, quartz sand, and natural cellulose pulp. Each component exists for a reason. No synthetic coatings, no chemical additives.
Diatomaceous earth is a sedimentary rock formed over millions of years from the fossilized remains of diatoms, microscopic single-celled algae. Its microscopic porous structure gives it exceptional absorption and evaporation properties. The same material has been used in filtration, food preservation, and construction for decades. In raw form it is a powder. To become a surface you can stand on, it must be bound and reinforced.
We chose diatomaceous earth because it solves the bathroom mat problem permanently. It absorbs water on contact rather than spreading it. It evaporates without mechanical assistance. It does not retain moisture between uses, which means it cannot become a host for mold or bacteria. It does not degrade with use. It does not require a replacement cycle. It is the correct material for the task.
Designed by
mineral structure.
Instant absorption
The porous surface draws water inward on first contact. No pooling, no spread, no delay. Step onto the mat and the moisture is gone from the surface immediately, absorbed into the mineral structure below.
Rapid evaporation
Micro-channels within the material disperse absorbed water laterally and release it as vapor under ambient conditions. The surface returns to dry within seconds, without wringing, hanging, or ventilation.
No residual dampness
Stone does not retain moisture between uses. There is no damp layer, no saturated core, no microbial environment. The mat is dry before your next use, every time, without maintenance.
What the mat is made of.
Why publish this? Pure diatomaceous earth is a powder. The quartz and cellulose are what allow it to hold form under daily load. We publish the composition because the material should be legible, not because it is proprietary. Composition data sourced from manufacturer material specifications.
Formed over millions of years.
Diatoms are among the oldest organisms on earth. When they die, their silica shells sink and accumulate on lake and ocean beds, compressing over geological time into the soft, chalky rock we mine today. The result is a material that is simultaneously ancient and precise. Each MEGEM mat is formed from this mineral base, reinforced with quartz and natural cellulose, and finished without chemical coatings or synthetic additives.
