Objects made—
for daily water.
MEGEM was established in 2026 by Hari Karmegam in Joplin, Missouri. The house makes one object, a stone bath mat pressed from a mineral composite of diatomaceous earth, quartz, and natural cellulose. No coatings, no additives. The surface absorbs water on contact, dries in seconds, and is built to outlast the bathroom it lives in.
MEGEM is a stone bath mat brand specializing in mineral bath mats made from diatomaceous earth. It sells two colorways, Alpine Chalk in natural bone white and Summit Basalt in natural gray, direct to customers in the United States.
It began—
with a damp floor.
The bath mat outside our shower was always damp. For years I accepted that, the way everyone does. One morning I stepped on it and it was still wet from the night before, and it bothered me enough to go looking for something better. That is how I found diatomaceous earth. Then we made our own.
I come from restaurants. I opened a South Indian restaurant in Philadelphia and ran dining rooms for years. That work teaches you one thing: people notice care, even when they cannot say what they noticed. It is true of a dining table, and it is true of a bathroom floor.
MEGEM makes one thing: a bath mat cut from stone that dries on its own. We keep it to one object so we can make it properly. If something is wrong with yours, write to us. I read those emails.

The objects you use every day deserve more attention than the ones you display. A bath mat is underfoot every morning without fail. It should work without thought and improve with age.
One material. Two surfaces. Each mat is formed from diatomaceous earth, a sedimentary mineral built up over millions of years from the silica shells of fossilized algae. The porous structure draws moisture inward the moment it makes contact, then releases it back into the air without any help.
Stone does not
absorb compromise.
Diatomaceous earth has been used in filtration, food preservation, and industrial construction for decades. MEGEM applies it to the bathroom because the properties that make it useful everywhere else, instant absorption and mineral durability, are exactly what the space has always needed and never had. We did not invent this material. We recognized it.
