Objects made—
for daily water.
MEGEM was established in 2026 by Hari Karmegam in Joplin, Missouri. The house makes one object—a stone bath mat formed from diatomaceous earth—composed of a single mineral pressed without coatings or additives. The surface absorbs water on contact, dries in seconds, and is built to outlast the bathroom it lives in.
The objects you use every day deserve more attention than the ones you display. A bath mat is underfoot every morning without fail. It should work without thought and improve with age.
One material. Two surfaces. Each mat is formed from diatomaceous earth, a sedimentary mineral built up over millions of years from the silica shells of fossilized algae. The porous structure draws moisture inward the moment it makes contact, then releases it back into the air without any help.
Stone does not
absorb compromise.
Diatomaceous earth has been used in filtration, food preservation, and industrial construction for decades. MEGEM applies it to the bathroom because the properties that make it useful everywhere else, instant absorption and mineral durability, are exactly what the space has always needed and never had. We did not invent this material. We recognized it.
